Statement on the Explosion at Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington

This week I have been campaigning with my Somali friends on the east side of Bloomington near Smith Park. I enjoyed talking to all members of the Smith Park neighborhood. This is a neighborhood full of passionate men and women that are proud of their neighborhood and Smith Park.

I attended the noon press conference at the Dar Al Farooq Mosque today along with a group of community members who are allies of the Muslim community in Bloomington. I was shocked to learn that during the preparation for morning prayer (Fajr prayer) a man in a pick-up truck threw an explosive device into the office of the Imam at the mosque. Thankfully, no one was hurt or injured by the explosion. This is an act of terrorism that is meant to instill fear on the neighborhood and the Smith Park community. We must not become fearful nor more divided. This is the time to unify as a community and stand together. Diversity is an asset to the Smith Park neighborhood and to Bloomington.
